MCAS TESTING RESUMES

MCAS testing resumes in Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 on May 12.  All four classes will be taking Math MCAS tests.  Grade 5 also gets to take Science and Social Studies MCAS.  The schedule is as follows:

            Grade 3    -     May 15 & 16

            Grade 4    -     May 22 & 23

            Grade 5    -     May 13 & 14 (math)

                                    May 20 & 21 (science)

                                    May 27 & 28 (social studies)

No student is excused from these tests.  We have to make-up any session a child misses within the three week testing period.  If a child is absent for the entire testing period, a doctorÕs note is required for a medical excuse from the test.  These tests are a tremendous undertaking for our staff and your children.  Please do you best to have your child at school on their testing days, having had a good nightÕs sleep and a hearty breakfast.  Many thanks!

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .

MORNING COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL, LAST CALL!

The sixth and final opportunity to sit down and chat with the principal for the current school year will be next Friday, May 16 at 8:30 in the school cafeteria.  IÕll be bringing along the draft of the new behavior/discipline policy to share.  Hope you can come!

EVACUATION AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS

On Wednesday, April 30, we had a planned Evacuation Drill.  This is a practice of the plan we would use if we had to evacuate the building and take the children to a safe location and remain there.  On Wednesday, the students did a terrific job of gathering their backpacks and coats and quietly following their teachers out of the building to the gathering spot we used that day on the playground.  Both this announced Evacuation Drill and the Lockdown Drill practice we had last month went very smoothly.  Now, sometime in the remaining weeks of school we will be having UNANNOUNCED Lockdown AND Evacuation Drills.  I donÕt even know when they will happen.  The police, fire and superintendent of Union 28 will be coordinating these drills and assessing how well we respond.  I know our students and staff are ready and we will do well!

SCHOOL LUNCH BILLS

Last week our Food Service Manager, Jill Houseal, sent home notices to families that had an outstanding bill for school lunches.  With the end of the school year fast approaching, we are hoping to have all school lunch accounts balanced.  If on June 17 a student still owes lunch money, his/her report card will be held by the office until the account is cleared.  Many thanks for your kind understanding of our need to keep our school lunch program financially solvent!

PTO CLOTHING SWAP

Are you cleaning out your closet? Do you have gently used clothes that no longer fit you or your children?  I am looking to organize a clothing swap at LES that would connect with the green theme of "recycle, reduce and reuse".  This will hopefully be something that will happen in late May (early June) and run for 1-3 days with a "take what you need - leave what you don't" motto.  At the end the remaining clothes will be packed up and donated to the survival center - or some other organization that supports women and children in our area.  Details are being worked out and I would love anyone to come and help with any aspect of this.  This is PTO sponsored!! Contact Pam Stone email pstone@hamsphire.edu or 413-367-0379.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Many thanks to all of you who signed up for the Stop and Shop A+ program. Our school will be receiving $1004.09 this year thanks to you!!

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED A CHECK-UP WITH A DENTIST?

Did you know that:

Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs came to LES in November and a number of children had their first, successful dental visit.  Good oral health is important to our studentsÕ overall general health so Mobile Dentists will bring its on-site dental care program here again on June 2nd.

Mobile DentistsÕ team sets up a mini-dental office in our building and provides dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and check up x-rays.  The children who return completed permission forms may receive some or all of the above services, if needed.

Mobile Dentists provides grants to families who require full financial assistance and subsidizes fees for those who need financial aid.  No child is ever turned away by Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs because of financial need.

Enrolling you children to see the Mobile DentistsÕ team is a wonderful opportunity to give them preventive dental care easily and conveniently right at school.  If you want your child to see the Mobile Dentists, please fill out the permission form completely and return it to your childÕs teacher.

You can learn more about Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs by going to is website: www.mobiledentists.com and watching the short video that details its work.
