IN THE SCHOOLHOUSE
Many interesting projects are happening in classes already and it is only the seventh day of school! From preschool through Grade 6, exciting projects have been started in addition to the serious business of getting classroom routines and expectations in place. The preschoolers and kindergartners have only had four days of school, but the preschoolers have already made special placemats that they will use this year every time they eat snack. In Kindergarten, the new class pet has been the center of attention. It is a fluffy, beige and white hamster named “Jumping Josie” and usually she is jumping all over her cage, just fascinating to watch. Both Grade 1 classes are going buggy, studying insects as their first big science unit. Many very interesting creepy crawlies have come to school in a wide variety of containers for the children to observe. Students in Grades 2 and 3 are almost finished a unit called “All About Me”. They have completed one page lists of things that share what makes each of them unique. An almost life-size poster of themselves made out of oak-tag and construction paper completes this exploration of self and soon will appear in the hallway outside Grade 2 and 3. Grade 4 students are also learning about themselves, but this time the focus is on ancestors. Each of them has brought something from home that belonged to an ancestor. An interesting collection of items resulted including a seltzer bottle, a diamond brooch, and a coat of arms. Grade 5 has embarked on a study of world geography by drawing maps of their
world - Leverett. One project these students started last spring is now complete. They planted garlic in the courtyard garden and they will be bringing home fresh garlic this weekend to do some spicy cooking. Grade 6 has completed a math challenge called “Four Fours”, which involves representing the numbers 1 through 20 using only fours. Ask a Grade 6 student if you need help solving that one!

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .
COFFEE MORNING
At least once a month, parents and other interested members of the community will have the opportunity to meet with the principal, Anne Ross and talk about things they have on their minds. The inaugural event will be a Coffee Morning next Friday, September 14 starting at 8:30 in the cafeteria. There will not be a set topic that morning. Folks can come with questions, ideas, suggestions, and constructive critiques to share. There will be coffee and cake and if it is nice, we might sit outside. In future months, these get-togethers may take place in the late afternoon or evenings, so everyone should have a chance to attend, no matter what your personal schedule might be. Hope you will mark this date on your new school calendar and join me.
ADDITIONAL PARKING
You may have noticed the construction happening in the north parking lot over the past few days. Additional parking spaces are being carved out of the north edge of the parking lot. These will be diagonal parking spaces, facing the Fire Department. We hope to have 9 additional spaces for parking when it is completed. Many thanks to the guys at the Town Highway Department and Will Stratford for making this
(continued on the next page)
improvement for the benefit of everyone at school. Be on the lookout for additional parking on the south side of the school. It should appear before the snow flies!
DO YOU HAVE YOUR HANDBOOK, CALENDAR, AND DIRECTORY?
Last Friday, the oldest child in your LES family was given the Official School Calendar and the Official School Handbook to bring home. Both the Handbook and Calendar contain important information regarding school routines and practices and dates of special events throughout the school year. Today, the oldest child in each family will bring home an all-school Directory. Please contact Marilyn at school if you did not receive any of these items. Many thanks to the PTO for their financial support in creating our Calendar and Directory.
