SUBSTITUTE TEACHER POLICY

  1. It shall be the policy of this Committee, in so far as it is possible, to employ as substitute teachers, only those who have an earned bachelor’s degree or hold a recognized teaching certificate.
  2. Salary for substitutes hired on a per diem basis will be paid at a daily rate established by the Leverett School Committee.For a half day of substitution, a substitute teacher will receive one-half day’s pay.
  3. Substitute teachers will be paid only for days when actual service was rendered.
  4. Substitute teachers shall be required to carry out all the normal functions of the classroom teachers in maintaining the classroom instruction at optimum level.
  5. For short term substitute work (one to ten days), the aim should be to carry out the plans and objectives of the regular teacher, correcting papers as are necessary and carrying out any task as assigned by the principal.
  6. Long-term substitutes (11 days plus), should not only maintain the same level of instruction in the classroom, but under the guidance of the Principal, should initiate new projects and plans in keeping with the planned curriculum.The long-term substitute will assume the absent teacher’s daily responsibilities.The long-term substitute will, if necessary, engage in parental conferences.A long term substitute position is designated by the principal in consultation with the superintendent.Long-term substitutes shall be certified teachers and will be paid at step 1 of the bachelor’s or master’s salary schedule depending on their level of education.
  7. When a teacher aide serves as a short term substitute, he/she will be paid at a rate that is set by the School Committee above his/her regular pay.
