IN THE SCHOOLHOUSE
I Wish I May, I Wish I Might….
…ah, that it could be so easy! Budget time is once again upon us, and it most definitely is a time when wishes and realities do not always line up. The Town of Leverett is facing some significant budget constraints, and that has trickled down to all Town departments. The school is the Town of Leverett’s most significant cost, and there are often many questions about school expenditures. That is to be expected, since school budgeting is a complex process.
I have worked with Superintendent Jennifer Haggerty and Aaron Osborne, Director of Finance and Operations to develop the F17 budget, which will be presented in public hearing on February 23rd. It is important to us that the budget is fully understood, and that there is opportunity for parents’ questions and feedback prior to the public hearing and, ultimately, a vote at Town Meeting.
Recognizing that evening meetings are difficult for parents, the School Committee will offer a Budget Forum on Tuesday, January 26th from 7:45-8:30 a.m. At that time, we will go through the proposed budget and answer questions. Childcare will be available, and children may also have a school breakfast (breakfast begins at 8:30).
I encourage all parents and caregivers to participate in this process, and very much hope to see many of you the morning of January 26th!

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .
Recess in Winter
From the LES Handbook:
Children are expected to go outside at recess time and should be dressed appropriately. During rainy or extremely cold weather (below 0ºF) recess will be held indoors. Between 0º and 20ºF, the Principal will make a decision regarding outside/inside recess. In general, we expect children who are well enough to be in school to participate in all school activities, including outdoor recess.
Children who want to play in the snow during recess MUST wear:
Grades 5-6: Boots; Snow pants are required for sliding in the snow.
Grades 2-4: Boots for playing on top of the snow; snow pants required for sliding or playing in the snow.
PreK-Grade 1: Boots and snow pants
One Person’s Trash is a Kindergartener’s Treasure!

KIDS YOGA
With Jai Fuller at The Yoga Center Amherst
Kids yoga is a playground that bridges the gulf between inner self and outer self. These classes draw on practices from Kundalini yoga, Hatha yoga and Awareness thought the body to support kids in developing self awareness, (mind and body), self regulation, perseverance, and compassion. And they are super fun! Kids will learn that yoga is play, and play is yoga.
