IN THE SCHOOLHOUSE
In the opening meeting with the entire U28 staff, Superintendent Bob Mahler spoke of education being about loving relationships. As a new member of the Leverett community, his message was particularly thought-provoking for me. From my very first visit in Leverett, I was struck by just such relationships. Teachers here are amazingly dedicated to their practice and the children. The children in this building are incredibly caring for each other. And parents and community members care deeply about the school and everyone in its midst, furthering the school’s capacity and commitment to foster learning that is truly focused on the ‘whole child.’
I am so impressed with the way that families have reached out to new members of the school community, particularly in the preschool and kindergarten. During the preschool and kindergarten gatherings, I have heard parents offer to explain how to locate new places or resources, or speak of the rituals and traditions that are such a rich part of this school, putting the new parents at ease.
And, speaking of new community members, I want to make sure that everyone knows about some new and relatively new members of the Leverett staff. In the cafeteria , Tabatha McLellan has joined Molly in the kitchen. School Psychologist Bethany Politylo is now at LES four days a week. Lauren Croce is the Special Educator for grades three and four, and we welcome Martha Guilmette as the paraeducator in our kindergarten.
New beginnings are so much about establishing new and caring relationships. As we move beyond the excitement of the opening days of school, I look forward to seeing those many loving relationships within LES grow and flourish.
