LEVERETT SCHOOL COMMITTEE

SUBSTITUTE PROFESSIONAL STAFF EMPLOYMENT

  • It shall be the policy of this Committee, in so far as it is possible, to employ as substitute teachers, only those who have an earned bachelor’s degree or hold a recognized teaching certificate
  • Salary for substitutes hired on a per diem basis will be paid at a daily rate established by the Leverett School Committee.  For a half day of substitution, a substitute teacher will receive one-half day’s pay.
  • Substitute teachers will be paid only for days when actual service was rendered.
  • The school district will employ as substitute teachers, to the extent possible, persons who meet the requirements for teacher appointments and will assign teachers substitute-teaching positions on the basis of their areas of competence.  When the supply of potential substitutes in a particular subject area is too limited to meet school department needs, there will be active recruitment for substitutes in those areas.  All substitute teachers will be expected to provide educational services, rather than to assume merely a student-supervisory role. They will be provided with as much support as possible by building administrators and teachers. The School Committee will set the daily rate of pay for substitute teachers, including extended-term substitutes.  The latter will be granted such additional benefits as approved by the School Committee.
  • Long-term substitutes (11 days plus), should not only maintain the same level of instruction in the classroom, but under the guidance of the Principal, should initiate new projects and plans in keeping with the planned curriculum.  The long-term substitute will assume the absent teacher’s daily responsibilities.  The long-term substitute will, if necessary, engage in parental conferences.  A long term substitute position is designated by the principal in consultation with the superintendent.  Long-term substitutes shall be certified teachers and will be paid at step 1 of the bachelor’s or master’s salary schedule depending on their level of education.
  • When a paraprofessional serves as a short term substitute, they will be paid at a rate that is set by the School Committee above his/her regular pay.
  • As with all hiring at Leverett Elementary School, every effort will be made to hire a diverse substitute staff.
